Cracked Sky Bowl

A single shallow bowl, dark and glossy inside, with a pale crackled exterior over dark clay. Several of the bowls in two stacks with one set in front, showing the crackle from different angles. A tall stack of the bowls, the crackled walls repeating up the pile.

Made during an Artist in Residence at Alchemy Art Center on San Juan Island. White slip mixed with sodium silicate was painted onto a dark clay body while the bowls were still on the wheel; stretching the form from inside then split the slip into a fine crackle and let the dark clay show through it. The interiors are left glossy and dark, so the crackle only appears from the outside.
