Horsehair Cairn Lamp

The stacked porcelain base, black horsehair lines curling across the white surfaces beneath a navy shade with gold trim. A second view, with denser smoke marks gathered on the lower stones. A third angle of the stack, where the horsehair lines wrap around the edges of the forms.

Six stacked porcelain forms make up this cairn base, inspired by the stone cairns on mountain trails. The components were fired in a raku kiln and drawn out while still hot, and horsehair laid onto the glowing surface scorched the calligraphic lines that run across them. Each mark is made in a few seconds and cannot be revised, so the drawing on every stone belongs entirely to that moment.
