Shino Tea Bowl

Single faceted bowl seen from slightly above, the twisting facets in gray and black around a glowing orange interior. Ten shino tea bowls stacked and grouped together, their surfaces ranging from carbon-trapped black to cream and rust.

These porcelain tea bowls began my faceting series. I start with a narrow wheel-thrown cylinder, cut facets into its surface, and then open the form so that the planes twist around the bowl. A high-fire shino glaze produces carbon-trapped blacks and grays outside and warm orange tones within. The bowls belong together as a set, but the firing gives each one a distinct surface.
