Soda-Fired Cairn Lamp

Stack of soda-fired forms in ochre, tan and dark brown, under a red conical shade. The other side of the same lamp, where the slip has run darker over the lower stones.

A high-fired stoneware lamp in the cairn series. The stacked stone forms are coated in a colored slip that reacts with the iron already in the clay body beneath it, and firing in a soda kiln draws that reaction out into streaks of ochre, rust and near-black. The result is heavier and more geological than the glazed cairns in the series.
